Using the Assistant

3 min read

The Assistant is a chat companion built into Rebrief. Ask a question in plain language and it answers using your clinic's own information — patients, appointments, and clinical notes — and can offer to take certain actions for you.

Where to type

The Assistant has one place to type: the search bar at the top of every dashboard screen. Wherever you are in Rebrief, that bar is how you talk to it — there's no separate message box, even on the Assistant page itself.

Tip: Press Ctrl-K (or Cmd-K on a Mac) from anywhere to jump straight to the search bar.

Start a conversation

  1. Click the search bar at the top of the screen (or press Ctrl-K / Cmd-K).
  2. Type your question, for example "What appointments do I have today?"
  3. Press Enter to send. Use Shift-Enter if you want to add a second line before sending.
  4. A panel opens beneath the bar showing your question and the reply. The reply streams in as it's written.
  5. To keep the conversation going, just type your next question in the bar again — it stays in the same chat.

When nothing is typed yet, the panel offers a few starting points you can click to send right away:

  • What appointments do I have today?
  • Which patients are overdue for a recall?
  • Summarize my last appointment
  • Show me recent clinical notes

What it can answer

The Assistant helps with questions about your day-to-day clinic information:

  • Patients — look someone up, read their record, or count how many patients match something.
  • Appointments — what's on the schedule for a given day or date range.
  • Clinical notes — read recent notes, or search them by meaning. Because it can search what you and your team have written, it can surface details like "which patients mentioned anxiety about needles" even when you don't remember the exact wording.

Note: Plain summaries and open-ended questions ("summarize my morning") work too — the Assistant figures out what to look up for you.

Seeing how it got the answer

Under each answer you'll see a small steps link (for example, "3 steps"). Expand it to see what the Assistant did to reach its reply — such as "Listed appointments" or "Read recent notes." It's there so you can check the basis for an answer whenever you want.

When it wants to make a change

The Assistant focuses on answering questions, but for some requests it may offer to act on your behalf. When that happens it shows an Assistant wants to make a change card explaining what it intends to do. Nothing happens until you choose:

  • Approve to let it go ahead, or
  • Decline to stop it.

You're always the one who confirms an action before it runs.

Your chat history

Every conversation is saved as its own chat so you can return to it later.

  • Open the Assistant page from the navigation to see the full list. Your chats appear newest-first down the left side, each with a title and how long ago you last used it.
  • Click any chat to reopen it and pick up where you left off.
  • Click New chat to start fresh.
  • Hover a chat and click the trash icon to delete it. You'll be asked to confirm, and deleting can't be undone.

Your chats are private to you — they aren't shared with the rest of your team.

Note: The Assistant runs through the Rebrief Bridge app on your clinic computer. If you open Rebrief in an ordinary web browser, you can still read your past chats, but to ask new questions you'll need to open Rebrief in Bridge.
