How Rebrief works

Rebrief turns what you say during an appointment into a finished chart. You talk to the patient as you normally would, and the tooth chart, perio chart, and clinical note fill in as you go. This article walks through what happens behind the scenes, in plain terms.

The short version

When an appointment is open, Rebrief listens, understands what you say, charts it, and saves it. Those four steps run continuously and quietly while you work, so the chart is largely written by the time the patient leaves the chair.

Listening

When you open a live appointment, Rebrief begins listening through your device's microphone. A thin line in the appointment header ripples gently while capture is live, so you always know whether the scribe is on.

As you and the patient speak, Rebrief converts the audio into text in near real time. It is built to fade into the background — there is nothing to click between findings, and you keep both hands free for the patient.

Note: The scribe only listens while an appointment is open. It is not running in the background of the rest of the app.

Understanding

Hearing the words is only the first step. Rebrief then reads the transcript and pulls out the clinical meaning — which tooth, which surface, what condition or treatment, and any measurements you call out. A passing comment about the weather is ignored; "occlusal caries on the lower left first molar" becomes a structured finding tied to the right tooth.

This is the part that makes Rebrief more than a dictation tool. It maps your everyday speech onto specific teeth, surfaces, and clinical entries.

Charting

Each finding Rebrief understands updates your workspace in two places at once:

• The tooth chart and perio chart update to reflect the condition, restoration, or measurement you described — the same diagram you would otherwise fill in by hand.
• The clinical note is written up alongside it, turning the raw back-and-forth of the visit into clean, readable prose.

You stay in control the whole time. You can review and edit the note directly, adjust the chart, and use your preferred dental notation. If you ever need a moment of privacy, you can stop the recording from the appointment header and pick it back up with Resume when you're ready.

Tip: Watch the chart and note update as you speak. If something lands on the wrong tooth, you can correct it on the spot rather than waiting until the end.

Saving

You do not have to remember to save. As the appointment goes on, Rebrief continuously saves your note and chart to your clinic's secure workspace, tied to the right patient and appointment. A status indicator in the note shows when changes are being saved. When you end the appointment, the finished note and chart are already stored and ready to review.

Everything lives inside your clinic's own workspace. Your team can open the patient's record later and find the note and chart exactly as they were left.

Putting it together

So the full path of a single spoken finding is short:

1. You say it.
2. Rebrief hears it and writes it down.
3. Rebrief works out what it means clinically.
4. The chart and note update, and the result is saved.

That loop runs over and over throughout the appointment. The goal is simple: you focus on the patient, and the chart writes itself in the background — with you reviewing and correcting along the way.
