A polishing strip is a thin, flexible band coated with abrasive particles, used in dentistry to smooth, contour, and finish the interproximal surfaces of teeth and restorations. Often referred to as a finishing strip or abrasive strip, it is a fundamental instrument for refining contact areas and surface quality following restorative procedures.
How It Works
Polishing strips are threaded through the tight contact point between adjacent teeth and moved in a back-and-forth motion to abrade and refine the underlying surface. They are typically constructed from a plastic or metal backing coated with abrasive particles such as aluminum oxide or diamond grit. Most designs include a non-abrasive center section that allows safe passage through the contact zone without damaging adjacent tooth structure.
Strips are manufactured in a range of grits to match different stages of finishing:
- Coarse — initial shaping and removal of excess restorative material
- Medium — refining proximal contours and reducing surface roughness
- Fine — smoothing and early surface polishing
- Extra-fine — final polish and surface luster
Clinical Significance
Polishing strips are most frequently used to finish composite resin restorations on the proximal surfaces of both anterior and posterior teeth. Once a restoration is placed, the margins at the contact point must be carefully refined to prevent plaque accumulation, gingival irritation, and secondary caries along the margin line.
Beyond restorations, polishing strips play an important role in enamel recontouring and interproximal reduction (IPR) — a technique commonly used in orthodontic treatment to create space by removing small, controlled amounts of enamel between teeth. When working near the gingival margin, clinicians must take care not to traumatize the surrounding periodontal tissue or inadvertently remove healthy tooth structure.
Progressing systematically from coarser to finer grits produces the smoothest, most biocompatible surface, supporting long-term oral hygiene and patient comfort between appointments.
